A529 vs. SA36

Recently we have been receiving angle and flat bar from our vendor that is certified to A529 only which after a google search showed me that this is a higher strength material than SA36. As you may know, the tensile range for SA36 is 58-80 ksi. The A529 often exceeds 80 ksi on these MTRs yet when we call the vendor to exchange the material for what we ordered (SA36) they send us another MTR for the same heat number with dual certification SA36/A529. Is this possible when the material exceeds tensile for SA36? Also, as we are ASME certified only, I have reservations about accepting this material even if it is "just structural" as our production manager puts it.

Clearly, the MTR shows that the material is outside the range of A36; therefere, I'd not accept it as A36. It would be a potential problem if the bar was used for ASME vessel construction. The AI would be correct to reject it also... should he check the MTR.

I think I'll run it by him on Monday. I wonder if the vendor is taking it upon themselves to add the SA36 to the MTR. Surely the guys at the mill would not approve it for SA36 with the excess tensile...

tjmay,
Have you looked at ASTM A36 (08) 8.2 in regards to tension tests? This may be applicable

We have a customer specifying 10 gauge plate in ASTM A-36. Our vendors keep sending us material certs for A1011 which is 1008/1010. Could I consider the A-36 as part of the A1011 spec.? I believe I can, but would like a second opinion.

ASTM A 36 is a PLATE spec. If I am correct, I would assume that one could not obtain it as a SHEET METAL gage thickness.

I agree, as far as I know you can't get sheet metal in 36. your customer is probably unaware of this.
