I'm having a disagreement with a coworker and I'd like to hash it out on the forum. I have several references that conflict each other on the availability of A709-50W steel plate thicknesses. Two references (National Steel Bridge Alliance and the FHWA) both recommend thickness intervals of 1/8" up to 2" thick. These are very reputable sources having been written with input from fabricators. Modern Steel Construction Magazine more recently published an article with available plate thicknesses that only goes up to 1-1/8" in 1/8" increments (or less) then it goes to 1/4". While I know it's just a magazine, we were given a copy of the article as a handout at an NSBA conference on steel bridge design! All of the fabricators websites listed in the Magazine confirm that steel plate of this grade is only available in 1/8" increments up to 1-1/8". Anyone had any experience with this?

I think this is the article you are referring to: I received the same article at an NSBA conference as well. I would use the plate thicknesses in that article, those guys know what they are talking about.

I'm fairly certain that you can get steel plate in 1/8" increments in other grades, such as A36 or A572. In practical terms those 1/8" increments are fairly worthless when designing plate girders for bridges once you get past a 1" thick plate. That has been my experience anyways.

As a steel fabricator, normally ASTM A709Gr50W (weathering steel plate) can roll max. thickness till 100mm (4inch),when improving technicals and heat treatment, some mills can roll max. of A709Gr50W till 300mm and guarantee steel quality. Can cheacking on
A36 and A572 can not replace of A709Gr50W,because,A709Gr50W is weathering steel for prevent atmosphere corrosion and rusty, but A36 and A572 is just mild steel can not prevent atmosphere corrosion and rusty.

Just curious, what would you use a 12" thick steel plate for?
