For really simple structures I still tend to use the ASD method. Simple beam center support moment = PL/4, stress = M/S, FOS = stress / yield, etc. Now that most structural steel is rolled as A992, is the correct yield strength 50ksi? I have seen some people use 42ksi.

Just specify ASTM A992, Grade 50.

Where does the 42ksi come from? LRFD?

I don't believe that there is a Grade 42 for A992...just 50.

There are typically 4 main types of steel being used now in building design:

A992 (50ksi): Beams, WTs, etc (rolled shapes)

A36 (36ksi): Plate, Angles, Connection Material (note these can also generally be obtained in A572 G50 but I would check with the steel supplier).

A500 Grade B (46ksi): Rectangular HSS sections.

A500 Grade B (42ksi): Round HSS sections.

So probably you are seeing round HSS sections with a Fy of 42. There are also several other fairly common types (A53 GrB for Pipe, F1554 for Anchor Rods etc). Generally you can find a table at the beginning of the steel manual directing you to what is commonly used for what. In 13th ed. manual, see Table 2-3 on page 2-39.

A 572 comes in Gr. 42 and 50. A 992 does not. People who just blindly substitute "A 992" everywhere they used to write "A 572" are going to run into trouble with Gr. 42 and, I believe, with shapes other than wide-flange beams.

But then you went and blew it with six more words.

is LOL one word or three?

Do you read LOL as "loll", "ell-oh-ell" or "laugh out loud" in your mind? I wonder...
