Hey People,

Doing some research into alternative manufacturing methods of a vernier pulley.

Looking to form it from AA 6082-T6 using a Die-Casting Method (High or Low Pressue)

Would anyone be able to advise on this, and/or suggest who to talk to about the price/availability.

Thanks,

Neil

While I don't have experience specifically with 6082 I would imagine it has similar (if not worse) issues as 6061 in regards to casting. High strength alloys are much more limiting than a standard casting aluminum alloy (356, 380, 413). Larger draft angles, more uniform cross sections, and careful consideration of flow issues are needed. These alloys flow poorly and begin to regain strength at higher temperatures and this leads to a host of issues mainly shrinkage and cracking. If porosity is not a major concern permanent mold (your low pressure method?) is much more forgiving with alloys not normally cast.

A sketch or better description (size, complexity, to be machined?) of what you are trying to achieve would also help you get better responses.

Comprehension is not understanding. Understanding is not wisdom. And it is wisdom that gives us the ability to apply what we know, to our real world situations

Rule #1 in materials selection--once it has been determined that a die casting is the process of choice to economically give you the features you need in the part, then SELECT A DIE CASTING ALLOY. Trying to die cast a 6000 series wrought alloy will just bring you grief.
