ABAQUS HETVAL for modeling ductile iron solidification

Hi,
I'm working on a model to simulate the solidification of the ductile iron. I'm using the subroutine HETVAL to define the latent heat as function of volume fraction but I've had a lot of problems with it.
So I'd like getting same brief introduction on this because it's the first time I've used this and I may misunderstand.
