Oh citizens of Abaqus, I come in peace from the kingdom of Ansys, seeking knowledge of your kingdom's great code.

Seriously, though, I have a question about Abaqus hourglass control. I'm not an Abaqus user, but I've been given a *.inp file and asked to interpret some things. From the research I've been able to do, I see that Abaqus offers much in the way of hourglass control, but as far as I can tell, one has to actually include the required keywords, and I've found nothing to suggest that Abaqus will include any hourglass control (of the c3d8r element in an explicit dynamics run, in my present case) by default. Am I right, or will Abaqus include at least a nominal amount of control if the user does not specify any of the related keywords?

In the Abaqus Users Manual 27.1.4 Section controls
is a description of the hourglass options. There is also mentioned what is activated by default. This is also mentioned in the Keyword Reference Manual for *Section Controls.

The integral viscoelastic form of hourglass control is available for all reduced-integration elements and is the default form in Abaqus/Explicit, except for elements modeled with hyperelastic, hyperfoam, and low-density foam materials. It is the most computationally intensive hourglass control method. It is not supported for Eulerian EC3D8R elements.

Thank you, Mustaine3, that clears it up.
