This may be a simple question as I am fairly inexperienced with Abaqus but is it possible to ensure the meshing in the region attached is normal to the external surface?

I've been looking around for a while but I can't quite figure it out.

Unfortunately Abaqus doesn't offer options to control the mesh layout directly. The only thing that you can do to influence the generated mesh is to partition your model (elements' edges will follow edges of cut) or assign different meshing algorithm and technique (sweep/mapped, using medial axis or advancing front algorithm). Of course you can also change the number of elements (including bias) for some geometric entity. To have more influence on the mesh layout you would have to use HyperMesh for example. Mesher in Abaqus is not so good.
