Hi ELQ.
Try ask ABB support in your area/country.
Once I try help via forum, it's so dificult.
1. What is CPU version?
2. What is FW version?
3. What communication cable are use?
4. Are work with DOS partition/from NT/Win98?
5. Try restart REG216 and your Laptop.
6. Generator in operation?
7. If not:
7.1. Are you know provide FW download, HW reset?
7.2. Are you have last back-up of set-files?
8. Are you have system A and B.
9. Are you have connection with other REG216?
In lot of cases FW download is help, but you need some expirience.
Regards.

Couple of contacts at ABB Power Automation over in Baden who know this system inside out are Rico Schmid and Olivier Moser. Both are very experienced and knowledgeable. I'm not going to post their direct phone numbers on a public forum but a phone call to ABB might be in order.

Sometimes I wake up Grumpy.
Other times I just let her sleep!

I can also recommend Lukas Maier and Andreas Callsen.
BTW, Scotty, I think Rico today work for IEC61850 projects.
ELQ, data, what I asked you need for ABB support.

Hi Slava,

Small world isn't it! If you happen to see Rico, tell him the guys at Teesside said 'hello'. I didn't know he had changed jobs - last time I saw him he was running a course for us on the SCS-100, now superseded by the SCS-500.

Hi Scotty.
Very small.
I see we have more or less same generator protection and SCADA.
We also work with RE_216/316 and SCS100.
I'm hope, next year, I'll come to Baden. We would like bay now two REG216 systems. I very like this city.
Best Regards.

I have asked ABB about this problem with a REG216 - can't remember firmware version - and their answer was that it was a known problem that could only be solved by loading a new firmware.

At the time I had the problem, it happened with the DOS version and also with the Windows version; and the only solution was to keep on trying, or perhaps go to lunch and try again...

Hi Yuma.
We never had problem with Windows version, but with DOS, yes had.
Actually problems:
1. Work with DOS version from Windows OS.
2. If you build set file for DOS version in Windows OS.
3. Using not ABB standard communication cable.
Optionals solution:
3. Upgrade of DOS version to Windows version FW 6.5b (recommended).
4. Check your CPU, possible you have old version of EEPROM,
you need replace it ( I don't remembare cost, but it's so chipper). I'm not shure in 4, recommend check this with ABB Baden.
Regards.

Slava:
Thanks for the info. I can't recall the version number, but 6.5 rings a bell.

However, about the cable: I have always used a non-ABB cable, and never had problems with Reg216 or Reg316 relays. Except with that particular Reg216 where I had this comms problem: it wouldn't work, either using the ABB opto-coupled cable or my non-ABB cable.

Regards

Hi Yuma.
We also used non-ABB cable (but don't tell about it to ABB).
DB9 to DB25 with some crossing, but imporatnt in non-ABB cable connect shield to grounding.
If you use FW6.5b ( it's Windows version) and had some problems with downloading, may be problem with EEPROM version, I think, problem was with REG216 up to 2003-2004.
In new one, from 2005, we don't have any problems.
Regards.
