about ASME Angle JOINT UW-3, UW-12 ?

The inspector stated that there is a Category D joint where the shell connects to the nozzle. However, since the shell is flat, the nozzle is not at 90° but at 45°, which, according to UW-3, classifies it as a Category B joint instead.

As a result, for NDE inspection, PAUT should be performed as required for a Category B joint, rather than UT, which applies to a Category D joint.

I need to verify whether this interpretation is correct.
Could you provide assistance with this matter?

dooki - there are some very experienced vessel engineers on here so maybe better cancel this post and post on Boiler & Pressure Vessel Engineering.
My only comment is if it is classed as an "Angle Joint" then see Table UW-12 - no RT/UT required.

I don't follow this reasoning. I agree with the AI....Cat D. I would classify this as a corner joint. Unless you have some info that you are not sharing.

Neither of these are "required" by Code.
