Good Afternoon All,

We typically utilize a sand bitumen mix (96% sand, 4% bitumen 45/60) as the tank bottom plate base in order to provide corrosion protection and give a working surface on top of a 4" clean compacted sand layer. Is there concern for the sand bitumen mix to "melt" if it is used for tanks with internal temperatures above 200 degrees F?

Thanks

The temperature will definitely soften the bitumen. The main factor that can impact the point at which at which it melts is the type or grade of bitumen. Harder grade bitumens have higher softening points, which makes the material better able to withstand high temperatures.

At 200F there really should be some consideration of insulation blocks below the tank bottom. The amount of heat lost is huge compared to the low cost of insulation...
