Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. One of the only nice features of 2005 is the ability to edit x-refs from a drawing they are being reffed in.

Does anyone know why every once in a while Acad will not allow you save changes to the ref? No one is in the drawing being reffed and no locks are in place. It just seems to be another goofy bug on my ever growing list.

Is there a patch available to fix this, or is there some mystery answer as to why this happens?

From Lynn Allens blog site...

Since AutoCAD 2004 you have the added ability to double click on an Xref and edit it in place. This literally opens up the drawing file and allows you to make changes. I recently received an email from a reader who was wondering if there is some way to turn this feature off - he was tired of people making changes to his xrefed drawings without realizing the impact.

So here is your answer - in the drawing you wish to protect - set the system variable XEDIT to "0".
