Hey guys!
I still have a r14 version of autocad with the softdesk 8 mechanical (AEC tools?) package -- trying to get everything to run on Windows XP pro but can't get an object enabler to work with it so can't pull up drawings made in ACAD2000 and up. Anyone experience this and/or have a solution?
Thanks!
Lance (freezing in unusually cold 70F weather in Honolulu...)

I AM NOT A REAL EXPERT BUT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DIRECTLY OPEN A DRAWING DONE IN ACAD2000 IN RELEASE 14 UNLESS YOU SAVE THE DRAWING AS A RELEASE 14 DWG. AS FAR AS ANY ISSUES OF ACAD 14 AND WINDOWS XP I USE R14 AT WORK WITH SOFTDESK CIVIL SURVEY PACKAGE AND UPGRADED TO XP WITH NO PROBLEMS. SO I AM GUESSING THAT THE PROBLEM YOU ARE EXPERIENCING IS THE RESULT OF THE DRAWING FORMAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCES.

Thanks for the reply -- just for clarification, the files that I'm trying to open are saved under 2000 and/or 2002 as a R14 file, but from what I understand, they have "objects" associated with them that R14 will not be able to translate unless you have the "object enabler" patch installed. That's the patch that I can't seem to get to work. Some files saved as a R14 drawing will open if there are no "objects" associated with the file.

I WILL ASK AROUND THE OFFICE BUT I DO KNOW THAT OBJECTS CREATED OR SOME OBJECTS THAT ARE CREATED INSIDE OF THE SOFTDESK ENVIREMENT WILL NOT TRANSFER THROUGH TO AUTOCAD. I AM NOT REAL CERTAIN IF THERE IS A WORK AROUND FUNCTION OR NOT. YOU MIGHT TRY OPENING A BLANK DRAWING AND COPY-PASTE IF YOU DO NOT NEED ANY OF THE ATTRIBUTES ASSOC. WITH THE DRAWING OBJECTS. OTHER THAN THAT I WOULD SAY PULL OUT THE USELESS MANUAL THAT COMES WITH SOFTDESK.

The following is from the Autodesk site. I do not know much about it, but here is some info...

Solution
As there is no Object Enabler available for Softdesk 8 Civil/Survey users, Autodesk recommends the use of the Explode AEC Objects routine. The recommended procedure depends on whether the file needs to be used again in Autodesk Architectural Desktop.

Method #1

Use this transfer method if there is no requirement to use the file again in Autodesk Architectural Desktop.

Create a copy of the file and open it in Autodesk Architectural Desktop.
Use the Explode AEC Objects routine to reduce all AEC objects to basic AutoCAD® objects.

Note: The Explode AEC Objects command is part of a default installation of Autodesk Architectural Desktop, Release 3 or 3.3. If you use AutoCAD Architectural Desktop(tm) Release 2.0 or Release 2i, you need to download this routine from the Autodesk Beta website. Refer to TS60464 for instructions on loading AEC Object Explode.

Use the WBLOCK command to extract the geometry from this file into a new drawing.
The resultant file will not include any AEC objects and can be transferred to the Softdesk 8 Civil/Survey user who can modify it as needed.

Method #2

Use this transfer method if the file needs to be returned to Autodesk Architectural Desktop.

Create a copy of the file and open it in Autodesk Architectural Desktop.
Use the Explode AEC Objects routine to reduce all AEC objects to basic AutoCAD objects.

Send the resultant drawing file to the Softdesk 8 Civil/Survey user who should insert this file as an xref into their drawing.
When the Softdesk 8 Civil/Survey user has finished working on the drawing, they need to detach the xref and save the file, and then send it back to you.
In Autodesk Architectural Desktop, insert the file as an xref in the original version of this drawing.
