I have a Acad2002 drawing with several other files attached. I will freeze layers of the referenced files in the drawing and save it, but when I go back into the drawing the layers are thawed. Does anyone know why and how to fix it? Or is it just a bug?

your drawing will keep the state of the original xrefed file. If the original drawing of an xrefed file has certain layers on, then they will be on each time you open the drawing that has the xrefed file attached. What I do is use layer manager to toggle on and off certain layers.
In the drawing that will be xrefed into your master; open lman and save your curent layer settings and give it a name. Next freeze all of the layers that you do not wish to see in the master drawing, open lman again and save those settings with a different name. Now when you open your master drawing those layers will be frozen.

That should do it!

Not sure if this is the same as your problem but thought I would offer it anyway. In my case LayerManager will not work properly with xrefs unless I have this setting:

Under Tools, Options
click on the Open and Save tab
Under the External References section you need to check the box that says Retain changes to xref layers.

Hope that helps!
Good Luck

YEP VISRETAIN is the easier way of doing it. I knew there was a system variable for it, I just couldn't remember what it was.
