Can anyone tell me what are acceptable materials to use for fixed ladder rungs according to ANSI A14.3? In particular are HSS acceptable? PIP practises STF05501 shows a 3/4" diameter rung. I believe the intent with that is to indicate this is the minimum accepted size of material that can be used for a rung. It does not state that HSS is an unacceptable material.

ENGMAN47,

Based on this thread794-126138, HSS is an acceptable form in ANSI A14.3. However, if you are using PIP STF05501 as a specification, PIP requires ladder rungs to be of ASTM A36/A36M solid round bar material.

Note that HSS is not in the scope of A36. HSS are usually under the scope of ASTM A500.

Thank you doct9960.

I appreciate your response. Very helpful. The information I had up to this point was vague. Your response as cleared up the uncertainies.

NFPA-13 had a requirement for access to sprinkler valves higher than 7' AFF, such as a fixed ladder, rungs clamped onto riser or chain and sprocket hanging down.

I can't find this in current codes. Anyone know something about this?
