Hello fellow engineers,

I am presently working on defining the porosity severity level for sealing surfaces in screw compressors. We have received few reclamations for a component(air regulator) as there was a leak in the sealing. The major cause for this was the pores in the component. We already have quality requirements (ISO 10049) to meet the porosity level for the casting models. But how do I realize how much porosity severity level is needed to achieve the safe functionality of the component without any leak? Are there any other European standards(EN/ISO/DIN) to determine the quality of the pores after machining? Any knowledge on this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Regards,

In my experience, we've always approached this from a different perspective; i.e. does the seal meet the specified leakage criteria? If it does not and porosity is determined to be the cause, then we either replace the offending component or apply a suitable sealant and retest.

Not what you're asking, I know, but just a practical view.
