Accessing MS Excel datasets from Tc w/out UG open, Unix and W2K

Does anyone know if its possible to access Excel files located in Teamcenter (as a dataset under the item revision) without having to call from within UGNX2? We use .xls files for build-ups and and it would be beneficial to keep the .xls file with the associated part file in Tc for collaborative efforts among various engineering personnel (that's the whole crux of having Tc, right?). Unfortunately, nobody seems to know how to view the file from outside of NX2. BTW, we use both Unix and Win 2000 worstations. Anyone have an idea or clue as to how this can be done? ...TIA
