Adding Tolerances at Model Level Dimensions 2

I was wondering if many people add tolerances at the model level of dimensions or do most add them at the drawing level? I know adding them at the model level does not have any use if you are not importing model dimensions to the drawing so I guess thoughts on the usefulness of importing model dimensions will be addressed as well.

Thanks for any input.

Mr BB I don't add tolerences to model level at all. Being an old tool maker I assume the model is absolute, and all tolerences are for is to manufacture the part with some sort of ease, so the part doesn't cost so much.

Hi Art,
You bring up a good point about the part being absolute so no tolerances being added at that level. However, I believe that the only reason people are adding the tolerances at the part level is to streamline the drawing process when inserting model dimensions.

Thanks for your input,
BB

Models should have tolerances if you have linear dimensions being pulled from it in your drawings, per BB's comment. Also, the model is BASIC only if you declare it as such. You still have to apply tolerances on the model. (In most cases, this is in the form of Geometric Tolerances, but it can also be those same linear dims) Otherwise, there's no difference between the model and a napkin sketch in terms of enforceability of controls on the end product.

Working in a place with a good toolmaker and all CNC equipment was revealing. They just made parts to the model. If something screwed up and the parts would not fit or function, we usually found a design error.

Mr BB and SnowCrash The reason "we" toolmakers make it to the "funny papers", is if you don't , then it's your fault. I try to assume what the engineer/designer is trying to make/do and will question and curious dimensions that I see.

Model tolerances let you use stackup tools, don't they.
Should automate fit lookup, and reduce transcription errors as well.

I only add tolerances in model when I need to remind myself of some special condition related to the design.
