Advanced Engineering Degree

Has anyone taken any online engineering courses toward a Masters degree?

I am looking for courses/degree in the automotive/engine field. I am on travel about half of the time, so an online degree is my only option.

Any comments regarding online courses would be extremely helpful.

I got my MSEE through Georia Tech's distance learning program. I never set foot on campus. Videos of the on-campus lectures were sent to my home, questions answered by email or phone. Same homework and exams as the on-campus students ( exams were proctored locally by company HR rep or librarian or anyone who is certified as a proctor). From that standpoint it seems equivalent in rigor to the on-campus program (and there is certainly nothing on the diploma or transcript that differentiates it from the on-campus program).

No matter how good the program is, there will always be people who think that if you got the degree remotely, then it must have been sham diploma mill or something like that. Some previous threads on eng-tips along those lines. Human nature I guess.

I think it was a great program. Their graduate EE program is listed among the top 10 in the US as ranked by US News and World Report.

I don't think graduate degrees are accredited by ABET. But look for a school whose undergraduate degree is accredited by ABET.

In Canada, graduate degrees are not the pre-requisits to get a P.Eng. An "undergraduate" degree is required.

If you have an undergrad degree in "chemistry", and a graduate degree in "chemical engineering", in Canada, you can not apply for the P.Eng without some further work - either convince them you have the knowledge through (school and work experience), take the technical exams, or take the required undergrad courses (the engineering ones, they will grant credit for the electives and such).

I would think it is similar in most states as well.

Perhaps someone can confirm this or correct this?

AFAIK that is correct, at least here in Ontario.

I second electricpete's option. I got a masters the traditional way and then a second though the distance learning way. Very little difference between the two. Of course, this was through the state university system. I would be hesitant with some of these outfits that heavily advertise. Got to check them out.
