Recently we encountered a technical issue with one of our clients. The Client requirement is E7018 Electrode for a 60" Dia 10 thk Water Pipe Line using Down Hill Welding Method.

All our welders are familiar with E7010 down hill welding and many of the good welders are facing problems of using E 7018 down hill welding. The Productivity come down to 1/2 times that of using E7010.

Pipe Material - API 5L Gr. X52
Coating : Yes; internal Painting and External wraping coating (details not received), weld area is free from coating/painting
Type of weld specified by the Engineer of Record (EOR) – Full penetration butt welds
Desired strength of the welds – Not specified
Welding method, ie SMAW, etc etc? - SMAW
Method of weld inspection to verify – 100% RT on first 20 and 10% on rest of the welds (Welder wise)

We need to raise a variation to client to use E 7010 electrode instead of E 7018. We are ready to do a PQR for the purpose. Request your expertness to raise the Justification for deviation.

This forum is kind of thin on welding and materials guys. Were I you I would red flag it for management to delete this thread and ask the question again in forum330 or forum725; You might even get good answers in forum378.
