Advice on taking API 570 exam

Hi everyone!

I want to ask an advice regarding the API 570 exam. I am a B.S. Mechanical Engineering graduate I have been working for 5 years as a Piping inspector and most of the projects I'm involved with are new construction projects or expansion projects in the Middle East.

My question is I have read that API 570 requires that the individual taking the exam must have a relevant experience pertaining to In-service piping services, is my experience valid to be considered as per qualifications for taking the exam?

Also, as of the moment I am doing self study and it takes a lot of reading tasks to cover all the pointers for the exam. Any pointers on which topics to focus on?

Some of your expansion projects may be relevant regarding in-service. Your new construction experience provides relevance regarding B31.3 but not in-service. You should have experience regarding piping degradation in a variety of service conditions.

We have inspectors who have passed the Exam, but all have had extensive refinery inspection service even though they provide maintenance services and do not work directly for the Owner/Operator. I always caution them to NEVER take on the responsibilities of the Owner's Inspector and inspectors due to potential liability issues if something should go wrong.

Thanks for the reply.In my case, my company supplies qc inspectors to main contractors. Usually, I am considered a rental employee so that means after piping reinstatement and before commissioning, people like me are the ones to be release from the project due to high financial cost.Mechanical Commissioning inspections prior to turn-over to the client are given to direct employees. Hopefully, I am looking forward for an opportunity to work for an inspection company that performs in-service activities and if you know some companies in the middle east, kindly suggest, I will appreciate that.

As of the moment the project I'm in has a piping tie-in activity and a demolition of an existing RTR pipe so I'm thinking that I can use this as a relevant in-service experience?right?

I agree with you with regards to giving reminders to inspectors not to assume Owner Inspector responsibilities because the weight of making decisions in that degree requires intensive experience based knowledge and judgement. Sometimes, as an inspector there are things that require urgent judgement whether a method can be done or not,I usually take a step back and consider the consequences then talk to my supervisor to let him decide.
