I used them in an application with air handling units where the carbon dust released from brushes was not popular with the QA guys (a medical company). I have also used them in hotel ventilation motors. The reason here was that the manager didn't want a new maintenance item. That was some time ago, and they seem to perform well after a lot longer time than brushes do. Haven't reached the magic five year limit yet.

No bearing problems after they were installed. EDM dropped typically from a few thousand PPS at 200 V/us to a few hundred PPS at 50 V/us.

I would be a little cautious in heavily polluted areas. Especially if there is grease or oil. Not that I can say for sure that it would be a problem. But I would test thoroughly before installing on hundreds of motors.

In "clean" applications like AHUs and HVAC, I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

I have specified them on VFD controlled conveyors in rock crushing applications where the extreme dust and grit conditions precluded the use of brush type shaft grounding systems. The oldest one I know of for sure has been running about 4 years, haven't heard of any problems.

Thanks for testing, Jeff! Sounds like a tough environment. Did you use any protective covers on them?

Thank you for your feedback. My application will be on an ID fan for a baghouse in a steel mill. Exposure to the weather will probably be the biggest concern.
Thanks again,
Bill

Bill,

Might be worth a look at the shaft grounding brushes from Sohre Turbomachinery. I'm keen on getting one of these on to a machine here for a trial but some members of the Flat Earth Society would die rather than carry out a trial which might prove them wrong. It might prove me wrong too, but I'm wrong often enough not to care too much. [wink]

These might be a little large for your installation, but I imagine a baghouse fan is a fair size anyway. Worth a look.

I would specify a cover over the entire motor to keep at least some of the dust from building up, but they never put them on; they were so used to changing motors every 6-9 months that they didn't want any restricted access (plus it cost more than $10). I'm pretty sure I have pictures of one on my home PC if you want to see.
