Hi all, just a new guy with a question.
I’m doing some research for a paper (personal) on current airframe technology for Hypersonic vehicles. My aim is to establish the feasibility of combining a Monocoque or Aeroshell structure for fuel celled areas and Reinforced Carbon-Carbon over conventional primary and secondary structures for non fuel cell areas, namely avionics, flight control and engine bays.
I’d like to find out if there has been any research into using primary airframes (not a Monocoque or Aeroshell) as a heat-sink for thermal transfer. To give you an idea as to what I’m talking about, imagine Stringers, Longitudinal beams and bulkheads etc were extruded or milled with internal cooling channels, coolant circulated within these (and other) structures could transfer thermal energy to heat a exchange. System components (mostly protected by insulation, but not fully) may be mounted at machined nodal points enabling dissipation of heat into the frames’ cooling system, or allowing a coolant manifold and return line to feed coolant within the components themselves. Since ammonia boilers and radiators may not be possible on such vehicles for long durations, perhaps controlling the flow of cryogenic fuel through heat exchangers using bypass regulators can be used before entering a fuel control unit….so long as this doesn’t compromise the calorific value of the fuel. This may offer effective thermal control of internal systems over extended operations at Hypersonic speeds.
