I wrote to Paul Mayne but maybe I was not very much clear on the subject, since he suggested to me a couple of interesting articles by Bolton and Others, putting static reduction and dynamic degradation in the same conceptual framework, yet not answering my question. I'll get back to him soon, in the meanwhile I'm posting this for my personal reference as well. He calls the static case 'reduction' and the dynamic case 'degradation'.
