Seeking clues from anybody.

I have a new Dell desktop Win7Pro-64, almost virgin, hardly anything installed on it. Have been struggling to get a good install of SW2010SP0 on it. Many, many attempts over the last few weeks. I am a SW Add-In program VAR and get my SW directly from Dassault Systemes for my customer support, so I don't have a local SW VAR that I can call for tech support, am forced to work directly with SW tech support via email (arrgh).

Actions:
1. Attempted install with license#1, User Access Control active, SW attempted to run but threw error of required componenents not installed. Finally SW VAR support informs me that I should be using license#2.
2. Attempted normal install with license#2 & User Acces Control enabled & SW Installation Mgr, immediately showed error about components not installed correctly. Verified Administrator rights, anti-virus off, firewall OK, etc.
3. Advised to disable UAC, uninstall + reinstall: same results.
4. Attempted #3 but with repair: same results.
5. Advised to bypass normal DVD autorun and use another setup file buried deep in DVD folder structure: same.
6. Multiple times with variations: uninstalled, deleted SW folders, cleaned registry, attempt fresh install: SW startup fails due to MS Visual C++ Runtime Library errors. Apparently something screwy is happening with the redistributable files that SW installs.
7. Advised to uninstall all redistributables, attempt reinstall: same results.

Can anyone offer any insights?

If you haven't already, try re-formatting and re-installing Windows with all updates?

If that doesn't allow installation of SW2010, try installing an older version of SW.

Have you asked Dell about this? I'd go with CBL's approach at this point. If you format, make sure you have all the Dell stuff you need.

I had problems like that with v2009 on Windows 7 x64. SP0 of v2010 was no problem, but no SPs would install. I got a DVD from my VAR that had SP3.1 built into the full installation, and that installed fine. SP4.0 on its own will not install without the errors you mentioned.

Odd--I've never had installation issues in the past.

I posted some of what I tried and learned along the way on the main SW forum. Maybe something there would help?

This may or may not be related, but I found an issue with SP installation for home use licenses. We have four networked seats at work and therefore have licenses for four home uses. The home use licenses (HUL) cannot be used to install SP's! We have to go into the installation manager, change the S/N to the office's network license, cancel the rest of the changes that process would have us do, then we can install the SP. After the SP is installed we have to go back into the installation manager and change the S/N back to the HUL's S/N. At the very least one would think the HUL could be tied to the office S/N on file with SWX so we wouldn't have to go through this aggravation.

You could also try downloading the latest full version-SP from the portal.

CBL, that's what I did and it worked prefectly.

tygerdawg, follow CBL's suggestion. I just bought a new Dell XPS studio 9000 for my home and this is how I installed it. I would also grab the lastest service pack version to download. Never start with SP 0 and don't use the DVD's.

thanks for the suggestions, I'll try that since nothing else has worked.

Am trying everything before going to the extreme of reformat/reinstall Win7 on a new, virgin PC. Utterly unbelievable that a software package is released to the marketplace that would screw up a new PC on the first pass installation such that it requires an OS reinstall.

How do you know it wasn't an OS installation screw up? Or just a conflict with one of the crap utilites that are usually installed on new computers? Symantec usually being the worst offender in my experience.

Whenever I get a new pre-loaded computer, the first thing I do is reformat and reinstall the OS.

I have CBL's back on this one. Like I mentioned before, I had no problems installing Solidworks on my new PC. If you follow the simple installation instructions, the software installs just fine. One thing I did do before installing SW was to test drive the PC for a few weeks to make sure the OS was working properly before I did anything. No software is prefect especially Mr. Gates software.

Thank you for your comments. With all due respect, I have verifiable evidence to the contrary. This PC was ordered without the usual mass market bloatware AV software and I installed my own 3rd party choice with proven stability & lack of conflicts. I did indeed run the PC for several weeks. Being a VAR, I have discovered through networking that there have been many, many instances of deep conflicts and instability with SW2010.

CorBlimeyLimey & macduff, stars for you. This strategy finally seems to have provided a stable installation. Many thanks for the helpful suggestion. [thumbsup2]

Glad you found a solution, but i have a question for you:

5. Advised to bypass normal DVD autorun and use another setup file buried deep in DVD folder structure: same.

What setup are you talking about? There are only 2 install methods:

1) Normal DVD install
2) Admin image

Outside of that there are no others.

SBaugh, the "other" installer is located here:

DVD:/swwi/data/setup.exe

and doesn't include all the baggage associated with the SW Installation Mgr.

My original problem appears to be isolated to the installation files on my months-old DVD conflicting with my new Win7Pro-64 OS. Strictly my opinion based on the evidence.

Using the SW IM gave me an unstable installation which was fully goofed up after repair/modification. It was suggested to use this "other" setup file. That one gave me a semi-stable installation....once. Then it degraded to failure.

That setup.exe file is the same as the other setup.exe, except your using the old menus instead of the new. In the End its the same setup and process, just different menus.

Sounds like a bad DVD... did you just try and download it instead?
