I would like to know if cars from the early 90's have ones that could have the same problems that are now so prevalent in the news?
If the deploy devices are so dangerous why weren't they encased in something like Kevlar? After doing an internet study airbags seem more dangerous than I would have thought.

never confuse the activities of the American legal system and engineering. Do the airbags in question hurt more people than they help? I don't know, but that is surely the crux of the matter to an end user.

Consider that a "car from the early 90's" would be over 20 years old by now. Would you really have a gripe with a 20+ year old active safety system that provides a 99% reliability rate as opposed to the 99.9% reliability rate of current systems?

ok, which issues are you referring to?
The systems which may go off at the wrong time, but merely inflate and release the bag as designed?Or the systems which may release shrapnel and kill the person sitting in front of it?
The systems that can release shrapnel would worry me a bit.

Of course, they were fine for years and it seems to be environmental/corrosion related.
it is an interesting set of problems.

Maybe the local lawmakers who mandated air bags should be put on the stand? No "passive" safety device is without some added risk.

The Takata airbags now undergoing recall weren't on the market in the early '90s. We (wife and myself and about 400 other engineers) were still developing them for the Japanese. Yes, there is a story there, to be told over a few beers.

I remember some discussions in The Pub about bad driver active deterrent systems... maybe we should just use old airbags ;-)

As the reliability decreases with age, the newer ones will be less dangerous that the older ones.
