Dear Friend,

I am working in API 6A valve industry.

I have got AISI 4130 certificate.

As per ASTM A29, vanadium is not there in AISI 4130 chemical compostion.

My material supplier has added 0.002 % vanadium in AISI 4130. his argumentis that AS per API 6A/5.4.5.2 Composition limit. -PSL 2 to PSL 4.

We can add 0.3 Max vanadium. And API 6A says that 0.30 vanadium is allowable for carbon and low alloy steel.

So confusion is that can supplier add vanadiumn in AISI 4130? but it is not allowbale in A29 /AISI4130.

And API 6A says for all low alloy steel? or says that if any perticular alloy is in any low alloy steel then supplier shdould follow limit for perticular alloy in low alloy steel?

That seems ok to me. I've never written a material spec before but I have seen 4130 specs that allow more vanadium than .002%. A29 table 2 doesn't list all of the alloys constituents, only the allowable range of important ones.

It appears to me that according to A29 table 4 for steels with >.25% carbon a maximum vanadium content of 0.10% is allowed, which is lower than your API limit of .3. A29 seems to set a minimum of 0.02% in section 5.1.2.2. I'm not familiar with reading ASTM standards though so I may be entirely wrong. At the end of the day API is not a design code although it is often treated like one; you need to use your engineering judgment to determine if the vanadium content is detrimental to your product.

Thank you very much .

i will count your information and will check again. i have not idea that what effect will come when vanadium is going to add in AIS4130. i will see it more.

As far as I know, API 6A did not mention AISI 4130.
What API control is chemical composition, in which AISI 4130 is close to that chemical specs.
chemical composition shall affect mechanical properties.
I believe it depends on what standard/specification that we need to comply, i.e. company material specification, instead of API6A.
Given all constraints comply, then it'll be no issue.

Hi Yudhichen,
Fully agree with you. API 6A has not given AISI4130 but it has given that which alloy should be in alloy steel. In APi 6A , Vanadium is allowed for alloy steel & AISI 4130 is alloy steel. so it is ok.

But in ASTm A29 , vanadium is not in AISI 4130 .so little worry that i should accept the material or not. If i will see as per API 6A. it is acceptable but if i will see as a astm standard , it is not allow.

but agree with you , i should go with ASTM standard.
