I'm reviewing some cold formed steel splice plates used as part of our lateral system, and the fabricator has specified both transverse and longitudinal welds on the plates. Given that more of my experience as many others is with welding hot rolled steel, I'm used to my weld capacities taking a hit in this instance given the differential ductility between transverse and longitudinal welds. I cannot however find any similar requirements within the cold formed fillet welding clauses. Has anyone come across this and found background information on why? (commentary provides no further insight). My only thoughts are that (except for one upper limit clause) the design of fillet welds on thin sheet metals (less than 2.54mm) is assumed to be failure in the plate through tearing, which may have less of an issue in this regard...?

Thank you!
