Hi,

Can someone give me advice on a casting alloy of Al and / or CU that will have similar properties to 6063-T5 (an extruded alloy of aluminum)?

Key matches are:
Coefficient of thermal expansion
Thermal conductivity
Hardness

It also needs to be able to be machined easily and avoid cracking.

I've been recommended ADC12 but find that very wide of the mark.

Thanks

Based on the information you provided, I would give serious consideration to an A356-T6 sand cast aluminum alloy. The mechanical properties exceed the AA 6063-T5, with the exception of elongation, and lower (27% less) thermal conductivity. Here is a comparison of results

AA6063-T5

UTS 27 Ksi
YS 21 Ksi
%E 12
Hardness 60 BHN

Shear Modulus - 3740 Ksi
Shear strength - 17 Ksi

CTE - 13 xE^-6 @20 deg C
14.2 @250 deg C

Thermal Conductivity - 1450 Btu..
Electrical Resistivity - 3.16 E^-6 ohm-cm

A356-T6 sand cast;

UTS 34 Ksi min
YS 24 Ksi min
%E 3.5 min

Hardness 70-105 BHN

Shear Modulus - 3950 Ksi
Shear strength - 21 Ksi

CTE - 11.9 X E^-6 @20 deg C
12.9 @ 250 deg C

Thermal conductivity - 1050 Btu...

Electrical Resistivity - 4.4 E^-6 ohm-cm

The A 356 is a common, cast aluminum alloy. The reduced elongation is typical in almost all of the cast aluminium alloys in comparison to wrought aluminum alloys. Be advised that depending on your specific application, elongation may be an important property to consider.
