We have a 4160V, 3000 hp circulation water pump motor where the stator coils show cracked VIP resin at the spacers and this is typical all the way around on the ODE with little on the DE. I am curious to know if I should be concerned about this. Does anyone know what could be the cause for this to occur?

The winding extensions inter blockings are designed to work in conjunction with the bracing rings or surge rings, both to prevent movement of the coil sides. When blocking felt is used, it shall be tight compressed before VPI impregnation, so when impregnated with resin, a solid ring around the winding head is created. The bracing rings must prevent the coils outside diameter to expand. If the blocking is loose or the bracing rings are not holding the coil head expansions, the blocking will move lose. That movement will reflect in resin fractures. The life of the winding could be reduced because of possible copper exposure by chaffing or due to tracking at insulation developed fractures.
