Hello all,

Good day, we are thinking of adding the following enhancement to SWX, but wanted your thoughts on this issue first:

"allow drawing view envelope to move, while feature remains fixed"

Here is why we need this enhancement:

1) We have nozzles in pressure vessels
2) We have a master pressure vessel assembly and drawing that we use in every project
3) In every project the location of the nozzles change
4) We use cropped views to show the nozzles in the assembly drawings
5) PROBLEM, when the nozzles move location, the circle used for the cropped view moves with it ... and now we need to reposition the cropped view in the drawing (sometimes it moves right off the page)

Locking the view position does not fix the problem, because it is the circle used for cropping that moves along with the nozzle (and not the view itself).

What we need is a way to fix a feature (in this case the nozzle) within the drawing envelope so that it does not move.

We tried fixing the center of the circle used for cropping, but then the circle becomes over constrained when the nozzle feature moves (this is because a sketch cannot locate the position of the view).

Before we send in this enhancement, we wanted to hear from you the following:

1) who has run into this problem?
2) do you see this as a valuable enhancement request? or perhaps you know of a work around to this problem?

BTW, my understanding is Pro/E does not have this problem, since its' views are relative to features (i.e. if the nozzle moves in the model, it stays in the same location in the drawing if it was cropped).

Thanking you in advance,

We figured out that this is a limitation.

In a nutshell, we will contact SolidWorks and make an enhancement request to add "drawing automation tools" similar to those ones that Pro/E has.

cheers,

Same problem here, I've turned this in to our VAR so we'll see if we can get an SPR assigned.

What I did find that works is using a detail view. The detail view will stay where it is on the drawing. You may have to use it instead of a cropped view, then maybe hide the view the detail was taken from. We used to do this back in the day before there were cropped views.
