Can anyone tell me what is the allowable bending stress in AREMA design manual? I just ordered the manual online, but have to wait for 3 to 4 days to receive it. I don't want to sit and waste my time and hopefully want to do some prelimnary calcs between now and then (I heard somebody saying it is different from AISC (66% of Fy). Thanks!

AISC is no longer "66% of Fy". AISC is dependent on compactness, symmetry, and shape. For yielding, you will ususally relate maximum capacity to Fy*Z or Fy*1.5*S. The factor used will also depend on whether you are using nominal loads (ASD) or ultimate loads (LRFD).

Arema has different allowable bending stresses for different structures. The maximum stress for a bridge may be 0.55Fy while for steel sheet piling it may be 2/3Fy. You need to read AREMA to get the answer. Unfortunately, AREMA is expensive.

Also, the specific railroad you are working on may have its own maximum allowable stress. Check the railroad's specs also.
