I am designing a cast iron column base plate and I was wondering if anyone knew what the allowable bending stress is? Factor of safety?

Old books are a valuable resource. Info from table in "Civil Engineering Handbook", Editor L.C. Urquhart, Copyright 1934:

Gray Cast Iron

450 lb/ft^3

Modulus of Elasticity
Tension or Compression: 15x10^6 psi
Shear (torsion): 6x10^6 psi

Ultimate Strength
Tension: 25x10^3 psi
Compression: 100x10^3 psi
Shear: 25x10^3 psi

Allowable Stress
Tension: 4x10^3 psi
Compression: 16x10^3 psi
Shear: 4x10^3 psi

This is the entire listing for gray cast iron information in this reference. Hope it is of help.
