Can anyone suggest a method or provide data for determining allowable compressive stress for a cylinder of specific geometry operating at a temperature above the limits in ASME Section II, Part D, Subpart 3?

The specific application would be a tall column constructed of SA-516-70 material receiving local band PWHT and subject to axial and wind loads. PWHT temperature for design purposes would be 1200F. Thanks.

We've evaluated this type of arrangement before, and without giving away the secrets (we were paid rather well for this work), it involved creep and creep buckling.

The strength of that material will be so low that you may indeed have permenent distortions. We have normally used a crane to lift up on the tower during PWHT in order get compressive load off the tower.
