Hello folks,
I am doing the calculation for stainless steel piping with a temperature/pressure rating 400F/4000psi based on B31.1.
B31.1 note(12) for A182 F316 indicates "These allowable stress values apply to forgings over 5 in. in thickness." One interpretation of this note would be that the code does not permit the values of A182 F316 allowable stresses to be used for forged fittings below 5 in. thickness, in my case 3/8" socket tee. In the other word, the designer must use F316L allowable stresses for all forged fittings below 5" in thickness.
Am I understanding the note correctly? It looks odd to not be able to use F316 allowable stresses in the calculation for small fittings at 400F.
