Hello,

I have some parts that were already made(includes machining, assembling, alodining, painting or powder coating). There appears to be a problem with something and we have redesigned few bits.

Below mentioned stages or processes are all to be carried out by me. Note: I have no experience in doing any of them, so i gladly welcome any suggestions, ideas or ohs issues that you would like to share with me.

I have pulled everything apart and almost every part has scratches. So basically I have to do "process name" (I can't exactly remember the name of the process probably some fancy word, please correct me with the correct process name) the Aluminium to remove deep scratches off.

Then I have planned to use a chemical stripper - Turco 6776LO - Enviro & OH&S friendly low odor paint stripper (OR)
Turco 6840S - Enviro & OH&S friendly water based paint stripper

to remove the paint. I hope it doesn't erode aluminium. (experiences?)

After this would be to Alodine them again. Probably Alodine 600 or Alodine 1200. Mostly its going to be 1200 because they come in liquid form as I don't have a spray gun or necessary equipment to carry out with Alodine 600 (comes as powder acc to catalogue) .

Any suggestions or ideas are most welcomed. Any other better way it can be done that you know??? Any one had my scenario ??

It needs to be done ASAP.

Thanks in Advance!

Please also stress on health and safety issues if there are any.

Few more things that I forgot to mention:

One of the aluminium parts has riveted stainless steel panel attached to it. From what I can see, even an attempt to separate the two could result in severe damages to both. So what do i do with conversion coatings?

From research it seems that it is not wise to alodine or iridite aluminium and s/s together? is that so? What else can i do? All are acc to MIL-DTL-5541 class 3 gold.

Some parts also have cadmium plated anchor nuts in them?

Thanks

I had some damaged parts as well recently, but these were small ones and not industrial volume. I did the following:

1. I identify all scrathces and mask them around. 2. I grind the scratches softly using Sotch Brite. 3. I applied Deoxidine 624 4. Then I rinsed the affected area. 5. Finally I brushed on Alodine 1201. Then rinse again using deion water.

Avoid Alodine 600 (powder form), this is carcinogen. Alodine 1201 also, but it is liquid, ready to use and easier to handle. Hope this helps.

Thanks mate. This is what I would do if I had flat face and the paint is only on the flat side. But my case is a sheetmetal part and I don't want any stripping chem or acid or chromate to get in between them. The paint is all the way upto the edges so masking the contact edge between them will be very hard to achieve. Not to mention they are held together by al csk rivets.

I just wish there is an easier way to strip paint such that it doesn't affect the alodine coating underneath and just to be sure I could apply an additional coating with the alodine touch prep pen.
