Alphanumeric

ASME often points to putting things in "alphanumeric" order. A new guy states the number as whole has precident over the value of each charater. e.g.
Z...
NAS1143...
NAS603...
MS21042...
A...
Since 1143>603 NAS1143 is higher on the list. I've never heard this in the military or civil world - but I wouldn't know where to point it out in ASME. Anyone?

Any doc or drawing that I have ever worked with, including military docs, has had lists shown in ascending order.
First alpha, then numeric characters.
In your case it would be:
MS21042...
NAS603...
NAS1143...

Just from my experience.

I can't help as to where this would be defined in the standards, but I have always seen it sorted in the manner that Window does (OOTB); simple numbers, first digit determinate, followed by alphanumeric. In your example, NAS1143 would appear before NAS603, because 1<6.
