Has anybody tried the Progecad and the Civil/Survey add on as the civil engineering software alternative to Eagle Point or Civil 3d? I am aggravated with Autodesk with their subscription fees and I am considering Carlson software as the alternative for surface modeling, profiles, cross-sections, road design and cogo for most of my land development work.

Carlson was really good when I used their earthwork software. Really easy to use, and once I got the hang of it I could turn out work much faster. Something that used to take me about 50 hours would take about 6. The director was impressed with how efficient I became. It seemed like the software was designed for only what was needed without the fluff that other disciplines need.

I am a happy Carlson user. If you are still looking for a solution, I would contact Carlson and demo the software. Their web site list features and also has video tutorials in the support section. I'm sure there are pros and cons for Civil3D and for Carlson. One thing I do love about Carlson, is when I do have a support issue, I often have a patch within a day or two.

Bentley’s Power GEOPAK is supposed to be a good software for roadway and infrastructure design.
