Alternative to marine transmission

Marine transmissions are usually high-priced and low-volume.

I was wondering if they can be substituted with high-volume low-cost car/truck-type automatic (or manual) transmissions, provided engine/transmission/prop driveline geometry permits

Marine transmissions, almost without exception, provide one gear reduction ratio and the ability to shift into forward, neutral and reverse. They also have the abilty to run at full rated power in either direction (to allow for counter rotating props) for indefinite periods of time. Automotive applications have significant periods of light loads/coasting; boats never go downhill.

A modified Powerglide can be used as a 2 forward plus neutral and reverse transmission with a SBC engine.

The main modification is to remove the torque converter and replace it with a direct drive, as the propeller acts as quite a high stall speed torque converter.

I guess if there is one automotive transmission that would work, the powerglide would be it - they are almost indestructible. Didn't think of that one.
