My friend Bob Talbert used to make complex 'breads', as in breadboards without the board, by using polyurethane insulated wrapping wire, and dangling components in space. He used a hot soldering iron to burn off the insulation; in the same step he applied a dab of solder while the joint was cooling.
Incredibly fast construction technique. Incredibly delicate, too. You couldn't pick them up off the bench without changing something accidentally.
