I am looking for recommendations for a good design manual for aluminum structural elements.
Maybe something similar to the AISC steel manual, except for aluminum of course.

There is an "Aluminum Association" that has a book - about $250 I think.

Just google it and it will pop up.

I believe that the thtle is "Specifications For Aluminum Structures". My copy was free, but it is dated 1976.

Te Alcoa Corporation has some good material too. "Engineering Data for Aluminum Structures", and Aluminum Standards and Data". Back in 1982, these were isted on the cover at $4 and $6 apiece.

I would suggest you take a look at these two publications, published by The Aluminum Association:
1) Aluminum Design Manual 2005
2) Aluminum Structures: A Guide to their Specifications and Design, Second Edition, 2002

You can find them at bookstore, best sellers.

I bought the 2000 version of the first book (a 3" loose leaf binder) in 2000 and found it very helpful. It includes a lot of design and data tables, design aids, material and section properties, ...

The second book appears to be a design companion text reference to the first.

Hope this helps.

Check the building code for referenced standards. It may have some manuals referenced in there, plus you'll see if you have the right design spec. It's usually chapter 35.

As UcfSE stated, check the building code, as the latest version of a "standard" is not always the referenced standard.

ADM 2000 and ADM 2005 are the definitive standards for aluminum design. If you get the electronic versions, ADM 2000 works better than ADM 2005 (or at least that's my case!).

I use them routinely and they are on par with the AISC Manuals for steel.

Since these books are pretty pricey and not locally available, anyone who has them might comment on their content before I take the leap.
Thanks

We're still on the 1994 Edition, so my comments might not be applicable to newer editions, but I suspect they are. It's expensive but worth it. Especially useful for me are tables with spans and allowable loads for select section. They also have standard shear and moment formulae, and some goodies, like flat plate allowable loads, corrugated panel allowable loads, etc.
My only minor quibble is that it's a loose leaf binder, so the pages are falling out.

I have the 1994 Manual also. It is excellent. However, for as little aluminum design as I do, the 2005 Manual is pricey at about $250.00. I'll wait until I get a sizeable aluminum job.

Worth every penny. Material properties, ASD and LRFD, good info on analyzing welded aluminum, a lot of design guides, etc. If you like your steel manual and you do any aluminum design, you'll like the Alum Design Manual. We have 2005 and use it a good bit.

I don't think any current building code references the 2005 Version of the Aluminum Design Manual. The 2006 IBC references the 2000 Aluminum Design Manual.
