Thank you for all replies. But what is a resistive sparkplug cable? Can I measure whether I have one? Is such an item reasonable? Answering to Higgler: What is an external FM modulator? How do you connect it?

Check with your auto parts store. They're usually pretty clearly marked.

External FM Modulator is a $30 device that acts like a mini Radio station. It's a little transmitter smaller in size than a pack of cigarettes. It has a cord attached to it that plugs into your radio. Instead of plugging a set of headphones into a headphone jack of your music player(CD player, MP3, AM radio,etc.), you replace the headphones with this FM modulator. Setting an FM radio at the proper frequency will let you receive it over the airwaves, just like listening to a regular radio station. Alot of health clubs have this to broadcast music or TV to the people working out, so they receive broadcasts into their FM radio's while they excercise. I think Radio Shack has one, I just got mine from CompUSA. It has 4 frequencies to choose from.

The resistive spark plug cables help to get a higher voltage which helps to prevent plug fouling. The only problem with them are the spark plug connectors. They are DIFFICULT to pull off . I cut them off and replaced them with the bakelite Porsche style ones. Works fine.

Resistive spark plug cables are far more common than none resistive cables (at least in modern cars). The center conductor is often similar to a carbon string, as opposed to a normal wire. A quick inspection can usually tell the difference, or use an ohm-meter (near zero is non-resistive wire, a few kohms is resistive). As IRstuff mentioned, read the printing on the side of the cable...

The connectors are a completely separate and independant issue (but there are resistive connectors available as well).

I've never heard of resistive cables being prescribed to prevent plug fouling. Resistive cables were invented to reduce radio interference. Is plug fouling still an issue these days ? Modern platinum spark plugs can be good for up to about 100,000km between replacements.
