I am in the process of preparing the technical specifications for a HFO fired engine to be included in a tender document; where I am required to provide the ambient conditions at the site location but I am not sure if there is a tolerance that should be added when specifying these ambient conditions.

Ambient conditions.

Temperature: Min 24 Max 32 ...........SHOULD A TOLERANCE BE ADDED TO THE MIN AND MAX TEMP?
Humidity: Max 83.7 ..................SHOULD I SPECIFY THE MINIMUM HUMIDITY TOO?
Altitude: 2.9 meters.................SHOULD A TOLERANCE BE ADDED TO THE ALTITUDE?

The source of my data is not very reliable since the resources available in my country is limited, hence my worry about accuracy too.

The altitude was obtained from Draft Logic; a web based software. The other two parameters were obtained using RETScreen.
Suggestions of software(s) to obtain reasonable accurate data are very welcome too.

jfreddy,

MAX and MIN are tolerances. Applying tolerances to the two values make no sense to me.

Does minimum humidity matter to you?

Does altitude matter to you? It sounds like you have an engine of some kind. At some altitude, you need to supercharge it, but this is thousands of meters. At an altitude of 2.9[ ]meters, I would be wondering about salt atmosphere, and how to avoid corrosion.

You need to identify units for temperature and humidity.

You need to understand what "ambient" means relative to where the thing will be installed. Is it installed outside, or in a building full of other heat-producing equipment?

Do not specify things that you or your system does not care able; that only adds to cost without providing value.

> if you are concerned about the accuracy of the instruments, then their accuracy should be built into the requirements, i.e., specify 23 to 33. instead of 24 to 32
> is your system so sensitive that you need 3 significant figure on humidity?
> do you really expect the engine to fail if it's at 3.0 meter altitude?

In many cases, you can look at datasheets that this manufacturer and others publish and see what they've signed, and you'll see that the numbers you've put here are inconsequential.

Temp. Must be indoors or underground? I don't think there is any place on Earth with such a tight range 24/365.
Site humidity. I would specify a range eg 10% - 90%
Altitide. Sea level. (The supplier will only want to know to the nearest 100 or 1000 m)

Your temp and humidity data must realistically cover the extremes for a long period of time (50 year is common). The NASA source is a good one.
