Hi All,

I'm about to start a project in Iraq with relatively simple earthworks, however I still need to prepare an Earthworks Specification or Design Guide. As I'm in the UK i've worked with British Standards and Eurocodes before, but not on American Codes (which the projects will be deigned to).

Could you let me know the main codes, and any good text books to design with?

Cheers.

A good open-source for specifications sections is the UFGS (US military specifications), and the UFC design criteria (again, US military). You can link to them through .
Good luck.

Any actual American codes for earthworks are a blend of local and state. If you're in the middle east, then chances are good you're in either "US Army" or "Who Cares?" territory.

suggest that you and the geotechnical engineer put your head together and discuss this. with earthwork specifications, the key is in the QA/QC requirements - material qualifications, sampling, compaction, testing and all of these likely would conform to either ASTM or AASHTO tests and specifications. as stated earlier, UFGS are a good source but realize they are government specs and if your project is not a public works project, than they may not be a good fit.

USACE has some good engineering manuals, here are a few:
EM 1110-1-1804 Geotechnical Investigations
EM 1110-1-1904 Settlement Analysis
EM 1110-1-1905 Bearing Capacity of Soils
EM 1110-1-1906 Soil Sampling

Look at the various state DOT's design criteria and specs...it's all there.
