Ammonia Discharge

Regarding ammonia release from pressure relief valves, ASHRAE 15 says you can discharge to the atmosphere or to a tank with water in it. Is it required to report a relief valve discharge if you use the water tank option? Where can I find information to design the water tank.

Its been a very long time since I designed a couple of those water tanks. As I recall, the tank had to contain enough water to complete dissolve the entire in-plant inventory of ammonia and it needed to have a method for the safe disposal of that water after a relief valve discharge. As I also recall, the local fire department (at least in Los Angles, California) had some regulatority authority over such tanks.

As for reporting a discharge into a tank, I don't know. Perhaps you should contact your local air pollution regulatory agency and your local fire department.
