Yesterday I posted the following message on the Welding forum but no response yet. Maybe someone here can help since this is for an airplane:

Fellow worker needs to finish an engineering drawing and lost his email notes.

We are welding 4130 tubing to other thin shapes for a support structure.

Weld per AMS-STD-2219. I will strongly suggest that this specification be ordered which will likely answer the question 1 and 2 below.

Use Filler Rod ER70-S2. This designation is in question.
He thinks it might have a 3 that he is leaving out.

1) Is this filler rod call-out an AMS spec?
2) What is the closest designation to that shown above that would be correct for this application?

Thanks in advance for your help,

The typo is this: Filler Rod per ER70-S2 and should be
this: Filler Rod per ER70S-2. Supposedly.

Therefore new questions are:

1) Is this AMS or AWS or who's spec?
2) Is filler metal called out or referenced in AMS-STD-
219? Jesus is THE life,
Leonard

A filler metal that can be used to weld 4130 is AMS 6457;ER 70S-2 is not an AMS spec.

AWS specs out for ER70S-2 or ER70S-6 filler for normal 4130 welding with no heat treat necessary on very thin tubing. I personally prefer ER80S-D2 for 4130 as it is a bit stronger and I still heat treat the welded area even though it is not specifically required. I build roll cages and in most cases I prefer to use thicker walled 1020 DOM TS. It's cheaper and weight is not a factor. The rules require ballast anyway and it's best to put the weight in a stronger, heavier cage in my case. Also I can stick to ER70S-2 and CO2 for cost savings.

AMS-STD-2219 has been superseded by AWS D17.1. filler wire for 4130 would be 4130 wire (AMS 6457) or Timken 17-22AS (AMS 6458).
