analysis of solid

Hi All,

Just wondering how one can perform an analysis of a solid model? I am looking sliver faces, self intersections etc anything that might contribute to downstream problems.

Also, along the same lines, is there a way to detect or remove duplicate surfaces?

Thixoguy -

I'm assuming that you must be talking about join surfaces, or imported data, because once a solid is made, and remains native, it should not be an issue.

In the case of closed (join) surfaces - one of the handiest tools for finding self-intersections, or multiple domains, is the "boundary" function. On a closed surface, there should be no boundaries, so any join which reveals a boundary, is invalid for closing. The function becomes a very handy analytic. Once you have located a boundary condition, you can repair the join. YOu will get boundaries for both missing surfaces, or ovelapping surfaces.

Trying to diagnose what will happen before you conver the model to STEP or IGES is a little more difficult. There are many variables, and not all translators are created equally. Even the cleanest models can have downstream problems, depending on what CAD system they are going from/to, or what the geometry looks like. It's too deep of a subject to cover here.

Thixoguy - A Healing Assistant option : Duplicate surface - this works on a group of selected surfaces, highlights 1 set of duplicate surfaces which you can either move to another geometric set or just delete.
