Anchors for precast panel bracing

Does anyone have experience with using/specifying Excalibur screwbolts to fix the bracing props?

By the National Code of Practice deformation controlled, including self-drilling, anchors are forbidden.

The Excalibur is a bolt that cuts a thread into the concrete and the manufacturer claims it is therefore an undercut type anchor, which is allowable.

I suspect he may be correct, but require more evidence than his say so.
This is for a job in Brisbane.

I like screwbolts, but don't consider them to be an undercut type, but rather a self-drilling type. An undercut anchor gets its tensile capacity at the bottom of the hole, while a screw anchor picks up resistance all along its length by bearing on the threads. Sort of like the difference in tension piles between an expanded base Franki pile and a straight shaft bored pile.

I agree with your description; the problem is that the CoP and AS3850 rule out using self-drill anchors, hence the re-branding as undercut type.

You can't rebrand a nail as a screw.

Workcover in NSW issued a guidance note about this when the ruling first came out (about 12 years ago now) and they listed which models of anchors were appropriate.

I will see if I can find it.

Thanks for the feedback.

As it stands I'm not allowing the use of the Excalibur.

It will take more than a distributor's email to convince me that it can be classed as an undercut anchor suitable for this purpose.

However, from the literature I've seen it appears to be a good product and it's probably not the last we've heard of it.
