Anchors in Face Of Brick Wall

We have a 12" thick brick wall (3 wythes of 4" brick) that we would like to attach a beam support bracket to, presumably with epoxy anchors, but we don't find definitive information about load capacities or even compatibility for anchors.

Hilti has HY anchors, but the HY 20 are noted for walls with hollows. If the wall turns out to be "solid" Hilti said not to use those. Then they have HIT 150 for "solid" walls, but as far as masonry they only cover "grouted solid" with 2000 psi grout.

Any ideas or references?

As a postscript, we are thinking that due to the age of the building and the overall thickness of the wall, which is actually 13", that the mating faces of the bricks are mortared together to create a "solid" wall.

Can you use thru bolts and attach a plate to the other side?

The mortaring of the walls together may not be very reliable. That may only be due to the left over mortar hanging over rather than an intentional attempt to mud the wall solid.

I'm surprised that Hilti doesn't have something for that application. If you used the HIT HY 150 anchor with HY 20 design values would that seem appropriate? Perhaps with an extra reduction of say 1.5 or 2 over the HY 20 values it might work better. Do you need all of the design strength or just something to connect it? Hilti might be able to tell you if you call them up and ask for some assistance. I have found them to be very helpful and polite when I call.

Hilti has been responsive, but they draw the line at something that is not verbatum from their load table.....that means they have not tested it and will not commit. I did suggest using the least values for loading, but they won't cross reference uses.

I can't thru bolt as one of the walls is an exterior wall.

We have given loadings that are pressing the top end of the load charts that appear to be "not directly applicable", so this may end up one of those things that can't be done.

Are the three wythes of the wall bonded together with headers?(headers are bricks turned 90 perp to plane of wall and extending into adjacent wythe.) Usual practice in older multi-wythe walls was to provide them every six courses or so. Were all three wythes installed at same time?

If you have a solid wall where bond between the wythes is questionable then the through bolts mentioned above or an adhesive anchor that extends through more than one wythe may be appropriate. Powers/Rawl makes a two part epoxy that can be installed using a cartridge gun called "Power-Fast". The Powers/Rawl catalog I have has a chart (3rd edition-pg 164) with ultimate load capacities for threaded rods installed with screen tubes in solid red brick. It gives both tensile and shear capys. The chart is reportedly based on tests.

Would it be easier to cut a pocket and tie the wall together with a few through bolts near the beam bearing area?
