Good day

We are supplying a 30" SCH10 90LRE SA234 WPB taper bored from STDWT to a client. We are a stockist of pipes, fittings and flanges and have been supplying taper bored fittings for many years. It has now become a problem with the client stating that only the manufacturer of the fitting is allowed to perform taper boring due to legal issues.

Is there any substance to this?

If it's not permitted, you're the not the only people who have been doing this, so you're in good company.

Indeed, Moltenmetal we perform taper boring for the likes of Chevron and Shell (South Africa), never had any issues.

I've done this for a Shell oil project in Calif., they had existing schedule 80 fittings, but by design only need schedule 40 for the project, so we called out tapering boring the fitting to match sch.40 pipe. Only other issue was the boring had to be 4 to 1 taper.

Maybe a requirement from somebody's misguided QA/QC program. No law against it anywhere that I know of.

What would you be doing, if you knew that you could not fail? Ans. Gov lobbyist.

It is standard practice to do this both in the stockist yard and in the field during construction. In 38 year of activity as engineer, never i have had this comment from client.
However, the only problem that i can understand could be related to the original certification, that stated different thickness. You can propose to issue additional certification concerning the tapering guaranted the execution according to ASME B31.3.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate your thoughts on this matter, much appreciated. We will be meeting with the client next week and I will let you know what was decided.
