Hello,

I am trying to run a simulation looking at the geomechanical stresses in shale rock. I want to change the element type so I can account for pore pressure.

I am new to Ansys, and so far I only know I need to change the element type in the command line in the geometry section.

This is what I have put:

et, matid, 216

r,matid,5000000 !(for 5 MPa pore pressure)

This is showing an "unknown error". So I have two questions.

1. Do I need to do this for every node? I have a 5m x 5m x 1m slab of shale I want to simulate.

2. What am I missing in my code? Do I need more parameters?

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

CPT216 is a 20 node hexahedron element with no real constant. Your real number in your code will be ignored. A few things to look at:
1. Is your model only made of 20 node hexahedron element? It has to be for ET to work.
2. Take a look at the help file here for initial state of pore pressure.

To answer your question:
1. No, it is specified on the element, not nodes.
2. Quite a bit it appears. See pointers above for starting out.

Sorry I'm not much help as I've not dealt much with geomechanics problem before.

Kind regards,
Jason

Thank you for your response. That file helps a lot. I will give it a try and see what happens.

Thank you again,
